Planting Hyacinth Muscari
Spring promises new beginnings and vibrant blooms, epitomized by the charming Hyacinth Muscari, also known as Grape Hyacinths. Recently, my friend received a delightful gift—a basket filled with purple Hyacinth Muscari bulbs.Excited by her new gift, my friend sought advice on caring for and replanting these beautiful bulbs. Here are some tips I shared with her:
🍂Fall Planting is ideal.
🌼 Spring Planting: While not typical, it can work in mild climate like we have in the Netherlands. Keep in mind that spring-planted bulbs may not bloom as expected in the first year but can adjust in subsequent years.
🌱 Planting Tips:
☝️Leave the Foliage: Let the leaves continue photosynthesizing to store food in the bulb for next year’s growth. Wait until they naturally yellow and die back before removing, and water when the soil dries out even after blooming off period.
🪻After the leaves have fallen, carefully remove all the soil with hyacinth bulbs from the pot and release the bulbs, taking care not to damage the root system. Dry them out and put them away in a cool, dark place until fall if you didn't have time to plant in the spring.
🌿 Ideal Location: Choose a spot with full to partial sunlight and well-draining soil. Plant bulbs at the same depth they were in the pot, about 8-10 cm deep, with the pointed end facing upwards.

- Mixed Borders: Plant Hyacinth Muscari bulbs along with other spring-flowering bulbs, perennials, and shrubs in mixed borders. Their compact size and vibrant blooms add color and interest to the border, especially when planted in drifts or clusters.
