Cyclamen in a pot for a tiny balcony.
Cyclamen are incredibly beautiful low, flowering plants that produce bright, beautiful blooms in shades of red, pink, purple, and white. I find them just perfect for containers, hanging baskets for terraces, patios and tiny balconies. Last October I planted a few pots with cyclamens on my balcony for a reason- they might keep blooming in the winter. They add vibrant color, look very accurate and you can easily combine them with other plants in containers or hanging baskets. I also planted celosia, dianthus, heather in purple- pink - white gamma and for a contrast I added some greens-hedera and ornamental grasses, and aromatic herbs for my kitchen: Italian basil, mint and coriander. Meeting a cold season last autumn I did not have any regrets- my balcony looked beautiful then even.
So how to plant and grow cyclamen outdoors? Save my tips.
⠀
☀️Temperature. Cyclamen prefer cold temperatures around 10-15 C. but they would not tolerate temperatures below freezing. So I had to move them indoors.
⠀
💧Water. Once the flowers begin to fade the plant will go soon into dormancy. That time is good to reduce watering so that the cyclamen plant dries out within two to three months. Once the flowers had passed, I removed the dry ones.
⠀
🤎Soil. Potted cyclamen plants prefer well-draining growing medium, preferably with some compost mixed in. I use a potting mix for flowering plants and normally I add sand or perlite into the potting mix to improve drainage. When planting I always choose a pot that leaves some space around the tuber and root system to let them grow.
⠀
💡Light. My balcony has a few hours of morning indirect sun and it’s enough for cyclamen.
